SOCIAL eating house + bar

Ultra modern, edgy with an interactive kitchen, a friendly bar and a great buzz – that’s SOCIAL

Matt and Amy Jefferson’s latest venture, an addition to their highly regarded ROCK SALT, adds another excellent dimension to the Broadbeach dining scene.

AN INDOOR OUTDOOR BAR + TAPAS restaurant and  it garnered instant popularity for its service, its chefs’ theatre and its innovative tapas.

The tapas menu is divided into;
  • Snacks
  • Oysters
  • Things on toast
  • Small plates
  • Large plates
  • Salads
  • Sides
  • Gourmet selections from the charcuterie

The house charcuterie plate served with sliced soft baguette is a chance to try several things and includes the wonderful Jamon Iberico de Cebo from Spain

The toast offerings are crisp fingers of baked dark rye bread with delicious toppings such as rare beef, truffled Manchego custard and red onion jam or the unbelievable hot smoked trout mousse, fennel, pickled onion and Yarra Valley salmon pearls.

Fresh sardines, smoked tomato, roast garlic, aioli and herbs offer a tasty sharp contrast

From the SMALL PLATES menu ‘Egg in a Jar’ is a treat consisting of a crumbed hen’s egg, confit duck leg, pommes puree and truffle mushroom ragout.

The 1kg salt bush lamb shoulder slow roasted in sheep’s milk yogurt from the large plate menu and the deconstructed lemon meringue pie with coconut ice cream and brown butter crumbs have to wait for a return visit.

Teamed with a fine selection of drinks including cocktails, beers and wines the menu offers a delicious range of well presented tapas dishes in a stunning and vibrant venue.

A GREAT "BUZZY" ATMOSPHERE!!

DINING SAMPAGUITA

The national flower of the Philippines, "Sampaguita"
is flourishing on the Gold Coast.

Not in garden beds but in the form of a delightful friendly Mermaid Beach restaurant.

It is owned and operated by Ving and Marilou Zacaries, Ving in the kitchen and Marilou out front.

Ving has had a wealth of international experience and worked as a chef at the Gold Coast Holiday Inn before establishing his restaurant six years ago.

There is great variety on the menu and
Marylou is happy to help with advice on the many dishes of her homeland

Lumpia, crisp minced beef spring rolls are tasty and served with a chilli dipping sauce.

Batchoy soup is almost a complete meal: clear soup with beef, boiled egg, shredded cabbage, noodles, green shallots and finally sprinkled with fried garlic and fried onions.

Guinataan Na Gulay is a delicious mix of snake beans, sweet potato, pumpkin, bitter melon and okra simmered in coconut cream with ginger, garlic, onion and whole chillies served with a bowl of sautéed salted shrimps on the side.   The melon has a delicate mild flavour while the ocra is quite gelatinous and the snake beans add crunch – a dish really worth trying.

Kaldereta is a Philipino style beef casserole with a rich, dark gravy that goes well with steamed milagrosa rice.

Typical desserts are Biko or sticky rice cooked in coconut cream and palm sugar and Cassava cake which is cooked with evaporated milk, condensed milk, coconut cream and castor sugar.

This restaurant offers interesting food and a unique cuisine well worth investigating

IPOH SATAY HOUSE MALAYSIA

MALAYSIAN restaurants may abound on the Gold Coast but the man responsible for their widespread acceptance is Thomas Hoi who came to the region in 1980 from his home in Malaysia, opening the Coast’s first Chinese-Malaysian restaurant the large Banga Raya in Broadbeach.

Along with his wife Meelin and, aided as they grew by sons Michael and Sam and daughter Theresa, Thomas established his new venture, Ipoh Satay House but with less pressure, pressure reduced even further as his student children lent a hand.

Michael established his own restaurant in Tahiti where he now lives while recently married Sam has proved himself a more than worthy understudy to his father and has taken on much of the responsibility in the kitchen.

Michael’s surf photographs remain a prominent feature of this warm and welcoming family restaurant.

Essentially a Malaysian – Chinese restaurant, Thomas also includes a number of Thai dishes.

One can find the green curries or tom yums of Thailand or the hawker-style noodles such as prawn curry laksa or Singapore noodles. There is so much variety in Malaysian cuisine from Mongolian lamb to the distinctive hot Szechuan dishes.

The ever popular roti chanai with its delicious curry sauce is a worthy starter.

Deep fried Hainese chicken in soya sauce is a most enjoyable main. It consists of moist tender chicken with a crispy skin on a bed of sliced cucumber for added texture. The dish is finished with a tasty soy sauce and chilli and ginger salsas.

Belacan green bean prawns from the blackboard specials is excellent – crisp green beans and succulent prawns in a clean fresh sauce while coconut jelly is always a light way to end an enjoyable meal.

VERDICT:  A delightful suburban family restaurant
