Thai on the Hill

Thai dishes like Thai restaurants are not all the same.

Indeed the difference is quite apparent at

"Thai on the Hill"

Owner – Chef Piti Chitchamnonk presents his dishes with subtle variety.

Among his points of difference the Kanom Bueng an unusual dish rarely presented outside of Thailand. It is a delicious combination of roti bread stuffed with shredded coconut, prawn mince and crushed peanuts served with a sweet cucumber dipping sauce.

Among his signature dishes are the Gaeng Ped Yarng – sliced fillet of roast duck with lychees, cherry tomatoes, seedless green grapes and pineapple pieces in a traditional rich red curry.

Add a Thai beef salad with its tender slices of marinated grilled fillet steak tossed with tomatoes, cucumbers and shallots with a lime and chilli dressing and you have a perfect meal.

"""THE VERDICT"""

Charming service in warm and pleasant surroundings with Thai food above the ordinary makes for a great dining experience.

Sushi CAFE - Chevron Island

Small and unpretentious this Japanese restaurant is a hidden gem in the middle of Chevron Island.

Proud Owner Hiro with his children Sarah and Nina
Owner Hiro Yamada offers a range of delicious dishes simply but beautifully presented at very reasonable prices.

Popular with local residents it also attracts diners from afar.

This is a courtyard setting in which heavy wooden furniture blends subtly with greenery, candles and soft background music.

As you would expect there is an excellent selection of sushi and the sashimi is fresh and inviting.

The dragon roll with its filling of cucumber, avocado and cream cheese wrapped in prawn with fish roe added for texture is both colourful and delicious.

Prawn dumplings are an entrée well worth trying and the salmon ceviche on a bed of shredded cabbage is a must is a must for lovers of ceviche.

Among the mains there are a varied selection of combinations which include miso soup, main of choice and dessert.

The menu is large and there are many well known Japanese dishes - Teriyaki chicken, Sukiyaki beef, Karage, a crispy chicken thigh fillet with ginger soy sauce, and BBQ pork to mention just a few.

A most satisfying meal is the tempura udon soup – a delicious broth with two large tempura prawns, an egg, silken tofu and thick wheat udon noodles.

Hiro serves good Japanese beer and saki but BYO wine is welcome.

THE WINE BARREL Restaurant and Lounge

It might sound like a drinking spot but The Wine Barrel in Mudgeeraba is in fact a most delightful country restaurant.

Warm and cosy in the winter with its crackling open fire place, it is equally as comfortable and inviting during summer.

Owner-chef Warren Carnall along with his wife Michelle have brought all of their experience to bear in creating a sophisticated and charming restaurant in this historic logging town.

A blackboard proclaims the mains of the day while the menu boasts a delicious array of tapas dishes.

The range is vast including an interesting bruschetta with smoked salmon, shaved fennel, preserved lemon and dill crème fresh; rare seared peppered beef with ginger ponzu which melts in the mouth; Jamon croquettes which come with a green pea puree; and the ever popular pork belly done with a chilli caramel.

The tempura zucchini flowers are crisp, stuffed with soft creamy Persian feta cheese and served with basil truss tomatoes and polenta, absolutely delicious.

An extensive list offers wines to complement any of the dishes while the décor with its 27 year old oak barrels and log wall remind diners of Mudgeeraba’s forestry past.

The tapas menu is a good way to sample many of the chef’s offerings and the portions are generous.

This is rural dining at its best offering delicious innovative dishes.
