Carmody's

Restaurant manager Socky Soares puts together the events which are always sold out well in advance.

The most recent featured Heggies wines from the Barossa with winemaker Sam Wigan presenting several styles and Chef Nathan Hay and his team providing complementary dishes.

The wine dinner maintained its usual high standard with great dishes perfectly matched to excellent wines.

The evening began in the lounge bar with canapés and a Rose bubbly by Jansz.

Three of the wines featured included a 2013 Heggies Riesling which showed great complexity and went well with a smoked trout entrée.

A 2011 Heggies Chardonnay stood up extremely well to a delicious offering of pork jowl with umeboshi, seared scallop, celeriac and green apple.

An exceptional 2010 Heggies Merlot was perfect with juniper spiced venison, braised red cabbage, vino cotto and buttermilk puree.

The dinner was rounded off with a 2011 Botrytis Riesling the lime juice flavours  adding to the enjoyment of an elderberry panna cotta with macerated berries, rose jelly and pistachio floss.

The dinner was another example of the fine quality always found at Carmody’s so ably run by maitre d’ Socky Soares and his team.

If you’ve ever wondered about Bali , step inside Palm Beach restaurant Masakan

Owner Doris Jaa has created a little slice of the Indonesian Island so loved by Australian travelers and many Europeans.

The tastes and aromas of Bali permeate the restaurant which is decorated in true Balinese style complete with bamboo poles and thatched roofs.

Lose yourself in one of the candle lit private booths and imagine distant shores

  • In the West beef rendang is perhaps the best known of the many Indonesian dishes while the satay sticks of beef or chicken with peanut dipping sauce are among the most popular.
  • An extensive menu takes diners along the culinary highway offering soups, satays, noodles, a range of meat dishes, sea foods and curries while vegetarian meals feature well.
  • For starters there are soups such as the authentic Javanese Soto Ayam with shredded chicken and lightly steamed vegetables.
  • Kanape, a Dutch Indonesian pancake filled with diced chicken and vegetables served with homemade peanut sauce is well worth a try as is Otak Otak the spicy fish cakes.
  • A hawker dish such as Taogeh Goreng:  fresh, crunchy bean sprouts lightly sautéed in chilli soya bean paste and fresh herbs is something different to try.
  • Gulei Kambing is a curry which originated in Jakarta: tender lean lamb fillets simmered with 20 different spices, simply delicious. The coconut rice is a house specialty and of course, as in Bali, noodle dishes are always popular.

There is more, much more to be enjoyed in this delightful corner of Balinese Culture

Cavalier Bar & Supper

Cavalier by name and cavalier by nature”

Such is the summation of the latest dining spot and bar to hit Burleigh

Dining on the Gold Coast, as it is anywhere, is an evolving feast with the Coast fast experiencing the diversity that makes dining out such an adventure.

Owned and operated by Adam Haralampou who along with Robert Morward also has the adjacent Justin Lane Cavalier offers a totally different experience.

Its deep leather custom made Chesterfield lounges, well stocked marble bar, silk lampshades and crystal chandeliers are reminiscent of a bygone era, classy, warm and friendly.

Predominantly a supper club, Cavalier is a place at which to drop in anytime after 5pm, meet friends, enjoy a drink and a pre-dinner snack or, if you prefer, stay on for a meal from the tight but exciting menu.

The bar, featuring marble, pressed metal and wood, is another strong feature of the room with a backdrop of bottles and glasses adding to the relaxed vibe.

Naturally enough there is an excellent wine list to go with a vast range of cocktails and spirits.

To nibble on there are oysters, olives and a choice of shared plates – all very tempting. There is pastrami and pickles, pork terrine, zucchini salad, beef short rib and greens to mention but a few. The supper club also serves desserts, cheese and coffee.

Climb the stairs and you find another dining area with the chefs hard at work in the large open kitchen.

Freshly baked sourdough bread, hand churned butter and a blueberry and almond tart straight from the oven all part of the supper club’s tempting menu.

Cavalier is an elegant addition to a Gold Coast dining scene which continues to grow and impress

Pigs & Pints

A warm and friendly bar Pigs & Pints offers tempting delicious little sliders to complement its craft beers and excellent wines and cocktails.

Established by James Brady the casual bar – restaurant is an ideal spot in which to relax and enjoy a drink and something different to eat.

Gourmet sliders on freshly baked miniature buns run the filling gamut from pork belly BLT to ham hock with celeriac and apple while the crispy beef with red pepper is superb. For the fish lovers there is a tasty Thai salmon.

In the evening from 6pm-9pm there are more substantial meals on offer – grazing plates of beef short ribs, ham hock, chicken or fish.

Short Ribs
Sliders
The short ribs are well worth trying, slow cooked for 17 hours, served on a wooden platter accompanied by bowls of Greek salad, spicy red cabbage, horseradish cream, a rich jus and specially made sliced bread, the beef simply melts in the mouth.

While sliders are presented in a wooden box and the grazing plates are large wooden platters – the dinner plates are flat slate tiles which add to the unique ambiance of this popular bar.

Two rooms blend into one through clever use of holes in the separating wall. The bar services both   rooms - the second including comfortable lounges while chunky wooden tables inside and out add warmth.

A casual after work meeting place or
simply a spot to enjoy at any time.

The Little Plate

It’s called “the little plateand little plates is what you get – albeit small but filled with delicious offerings.

Increasingly popular, this style of shared dining affords an opportunity to experience a variety of dishes.

This is also a little place with half of the diners inside and half of them out – alfresco style.

Bookings, most certainly, are essential at this licensed establishment which offers good wines, unique beers and ciders.  BYO wine is quite acceptable.

The menu is innovative and offers many different taste sensations. Helpful and pleasant staff can assist with your selection of dishes.

The king prawns in ginger, turmeric, nigela seed and fresh coriander sauce are tasty while the Cajun prawn and crab cakes with a smoked artichoke aioli are very different and delicious.

Cajan prawn and crab cakes with a smoked artichoke aioli

Sticky pork belly is well cooked and comes on a warm salad of beets, fennel, Persian feta and pistachios.

The dessert menu is very tempting and the cannoli filled with lemon curd custard served with mint and a cashew nut pesto is a treat well worth trying.

For the chocolate lovers there is a walnut and chocolate torte, rum ganache and espresso ice cream.

This is a little gem amid an interesting and ever evolving

Burleigh dining scene.

DINING SAMPAGUITA

The national flower of the Philippines, "Sampaguita"
is flourishing on the Gold Coast.

Not in garden beds but in the form of a delightful friendly Mermaid Beach restaurant.

It is owned and operated by Ving and Marilou Zacaries, Ving in the kitchen and Marilou out front.

Ving has had a wealth of international experience and worked as a chef at the Gold Coast Holiday Inn before establishing his restaurant six years ago.

There is great variety on the menu and
Marylou is happy to help with advice on the many dishes of her homeland

Lumpia, crisp minced beef spring rolls are tasty and served with a chilli dipping sauce.

Batchoy soup is almost a complete meal: clear soup with beef, boiled egg, shredded cabbage, noodles, green shallots and finally sprinkled with fried garlic and fried onions.

Guinataan Na Gulay is a delicious mix of snake beans, sweet potato, pumpkin, bitter melon and okra simmered in coconut cream with ginger, garlic, onion and whole chillies served with a bowl of sautéed salted shrimps on the side.   The melon has a delicate mild flavour while the ocra is quite gelatinous and the snake beans add crunch – a dish really worth trying.

Kaldereta is a Philipino style beef casserole with a rich, dark gravy that goes well with steamed milagrosa rice.

Typical desserts are Biko or sticky rice cooked in coconut cream and palm sugar and Cassava cake which is cooked with evaporated milk, condensed milk, coconut cream and castor sugar.

This restaurant offers interesting food and a unique cuisine well worth investigating
