IPOH SATAY HOUSE MALAYSIA

MALAYSIAN restaurants may abound on the Gold Coast but the man responsible for their widespread acceptance is Thomas Hoi who came to the region in 1980 from his home in Malaysia, opening the Coast’s first Chinese-Malaysian restaurant the large Banga Raya in Broadbeach.

Along with his wife Meelin and, aided as they grew by sons Michael and Sam and daughter Theresa, Thomas established his new venture, Ipoh Satay House but with less pressure, pressure reduced even further as his student children lent a hand.

Michael established his own restaurant in Tahiti where he now lives while recently married Sam has proved himself a more than worthy understudy to his father and has taken on much of the responsibility in the kitchen.

Michael’s surf photographs remain a prominent feature of this warm and welcoming family restaurant.

Essentially a Malaysian – Chinese restaurant, Thomas also includes a number of Thai dishes.

One can find the green curries or tom yums of Thailand or the hawker-style noodles such as prawn curry laksa or Singapore noodles. There is so much variety in Malaysian cuisine from Mongolian lamb to the distinctive hot Szechuan dishes.

The ever popular roti chanai with its delicious curry sauce is a worthy starter.

Deep fried Hainese chicken in soya sauce is a most enjoyable main. It consists of moist tender chicken with a crispy skin on a bed of sliced cucumber for added texture. The dish is finished with a tasty soy sauce and chilli and ginger salsas.

Belacan green bean prawns from the blackboard specials is excellent – crisp green beans and succulent prawns in a clean fresh sauce while coconut jelly is always a light way to end an enjoyable meal.

VERDICT:  A delightful suburban family restaurant

Thai on the Hill

Thai dishes like Thai restaurants are not all the same.

Indeed the difference is quite apparent at

"Thai on the Hill"

Owner – Chef Piti Chitchamnonk presents his dishes with subtle variety.

Among his points of difference the Kanom Bueng an unusual dish rarely presented outside of Thailand. It is a delicious combination of roti bread stuffed with shredded coconut, prawn mince and crushed peanuts served with a sweet cucumber dipping sauce.

Among his signature dishes are the Gaeng Ped Yarng – sliced fillet of roast duck with lychees, cherry tomatoes, seedless green grapes and pineapple pieces in a traditional rich red curry.

Add a Thai beef salad with its tender slices of marinated grilled fillet steak tossed with tomatoes, cucumbers and shallots with a lime and chilli dressing and you have a perfect meal.

"""THE VERDICT"""

Charming service in warm and pleasant surroundings with Thai food above the ordinary makes for a great dining experience.

Sushi CAFE - Chevron Island

Small and unpretentious this Japanese restaurant is a hidden gem in the middle of Chevron Island.

Proud Owner Hiro with his children Sarah and Nina
Owner Hiro Yamada offers a range of delicious dishes simply but beautifully presented at very reasonable prices.

Popular with local residents it also attracts diners from afar.

This is a courtyard setting in which heavy wooden furniture blends subtly with greenery, candles and soft background music.

As you would expect there is an excellent selection of sushi and the sashimi is fresh and inviting.

The dragon roll with its filling of cucumber, avocado and cream cheese wrapped in prawn with fish roe added for texture is both colourful and delicious.

Prawn dumplings are an entrée well worth trying and the salmon ceviche on a bed of shredded cabbage is a must is a must for lovers of ceviche.

THE WINE BARREL Restaurant and Lounge

It might sound like a drinking spot but The Wine Barrel in Mudgeeraba is in fact a most delightful country restaurant.

Warm and cosy in the winter with its crackling open fire place, it is equally as comfortable and inviting during summer.

Owner-chef Warren Carnall along with his wife Michelle have brought all of their experience to bear in creating a sophisticated and charming restaurant in this historic logging town.

A blackboard proclaims the mains of the day while the menu boasts a delicious array of tapas dishes.

The range is vast including an interesting bruschetta with smoked salmon, shaved fennel, preserved lemon and dill crème fresh; rare seared peppered beef with ginger ponzu which melts in the mouth; Jamon croquettes which come with a green pea puree; and the ever popular pork belly done with a chilli caramel.

The tempura zucchini flowers are crisp, stuffed with soft creamy Persian feta cheese and served with basil truss tomatoes and polenta, absolutely delicious.

An extensive list offers wines to complement any of the dishes while the décor with its 27 year old oak barrels and log wall remind diners of Mudgeeraba’s forestry past.

The tapas menu is a good way to sample many of the chef’s offerings and the portions are generous.

This is rural dining at its best offering delicious innovative dishes.

DINING RISTORANTE FELLINI

Fellini has for 17 years been one of the Coast’s leading restaurants. It still is.

It has sweeping views of the Broadwater, Southport and the mountains beyond whilst snuggling alongside a flotilla of luxury boats.

Chef Richard Burt
Classy, well dressed waiters and modern décor scream ‘Italy’, while the bar at the entrance offers pre or post dining drinks.

An unsurpassed view and welcoming staff set the stage for Italian dining at its finest.

Despite its luxurious trappings, which include an extensive wine list, Fellini is well within the reach of the average diner. A pasta with a salad and a glass of wine is just one of many satisfying and affordable meals.

There are many interesting entrees but it is hard to go past the Alaskan crab served with Beluga Caviar, finely chopped egg white, crumbled egg yolk, baby capers, gerkin, lemon wedges and crisp toasted bread.

Beluga Caviar

Known for its innovative Italian dishes the latest addition to the menu is the Patagonian toothfish, only recently removed from the endangered list.

Patagonian Toothfish

Firm, white-fleshed and moist this cold water fish is among the denizens of the Antarctic deep.Teamed with artichokes and roasted cherry tomatoes, it is beautifully presented and served with a large bowl of salad.

The fish is perfectly complemented by a Tiefenbrunner 2011 Pinot Grigio from Italy.

A most interesting and memorable meal

Cocotte Dining

As restaurant settings go Cocotte is quite unique – basically a Japanese garden.

Under the stars in the summer and undercover during winter it is protected and warmed by clear drapes and heaters.

Owner– chef Shunichi Tanabe describes his food as a ‘unique fusion of European and Japanese culinary styles’, a combination appreciated by many a good chef and astute diners.

The menu is divided into two parts, tapas dishes and mains.

The tapas offerings are delicious with generous serves. Share among friends for a great dining experience which certainly showcases the skills of the chef.

Try spanner crab croquets with yuzu mayo; slow cooked Kurobuta pork belly with apple and fennel salad; prawn and pork dumplings with wakame salad and a chilli tomato soy sauce and Bacalhau balls- Portuguese style crumbed salted fish and potato balls with saffron aioli.

All of the mains are extremely tempting - among them an ox tail and beef cheek casserole braised for five hours in red wine and miso creating unbelievably tender meat and a mouth watering rich gravy – a delicious dish found in very few restaurants.

The Cocotte bouillabaisse, seafood poached in saffron and tomato dashi broth, is flavoursome and packed with seafood.

Dessert lovers will not be disappointed.  For a light fresh ending to what is always a perfect meal at Cocotte try the lemon myrtle green tea panna cotta with chocolate Chantilly and fresh strawberry sauce.

Pablo Pablo - Palm Beach

As a dining destination Palm Beach has waxed and waned over the years – right now it’s waxing, big time.

Among the flag bearers have been Robbie Horley with the Palmy Café and Katie Goodwin who established Little St Kilda Rd Café and The Office.

Adding to this mix is Pablo Pablo which is rapidly establishing itself as a vibrant venue under the guidance of owner Leeroy Donily.

Paella
A casual Latin eatery and bar where the sangria flows, conversation is lively, Latin cocktails are a must   and a range of local and imported wines and beers can be enjoyed.

Churros
There are interesting mains to share including tender braised beef cheeks, slow cooked lamb and char grilled chorizo with melted manchego.

There is plenty of variety in the tapas dishes. Jamon Iberico Gran Reserva 24 month cured ham from free   range, acorn fed Iberian black pigs is just one of the excellent offerings.

The beetroot almond salad with crunchie zucchini fries is a standout and for those with a sweet tooth, the churros with a warm chocolate dipping sauce.

Young, enthusiastic and pleasant staff go a long way to making this a fun dining experience.

There is live music on Friday and Sunday and shared dishes add to the enjoyment, particularly the paella, while handmade wooden furniture, the recycled red flamenco bar and Spanish artworks add to the Latin atmosphere.

Like many of the Palm Beach restaurants this is a casual and delightful spot.
